Are you a nomad? Do you love hills more than anything? Got love for adventure? Got love for hilly rivers? Does outdoor Camping under the starry night or beside a hilly river amidst of jungle excites you? Do you love to explore hidden beautiful waterfalls or mother nature’s beautiful rare creation the ”River Canyon” ,which is seldom found?Does the chirping of birds,kiss of lovely butterflies ,sound of a flowing river and sudden sound of silence provide foods to your soul? Do you love those amateur jamming sessions with guitar/ukulele/flutes around a bonfire with local drinks and smells of smoked chicken?
If all the answer is yes and you are searching for a such place then your search ends here in Yelbong, a tiny rural hilly hamlet in Kalimpong district of West Bengal with lovely villagers who are ready to welcome you and show you the hidden treasures, mother nature kept around them and they are protecting them very well.
Let me introduce this very beautiful place which is very lesser known to many a travel bugs.
You have to take the road via Bagrakot to reach the village,last 4 km is only accessed by foot or 4×4 car (available on request). It’s near to New mal Jn and from Siliguri it will take around 2.5 hours.The distance from bagrakot is around 18km.Last 4km is only accessed either by foot or 4×4 car.
Things around ::
The tiny hilly hamlet consists of around 40 houses and offers a great view of Sunrise as well as Sunset. Maximum villagers are christian so there is a church too and one NGO funded school for the children.
A 25mint down walk will take you to the River Ramti a part of the River Ghees !!
The great river canyon is there only, Now if you plan for camping then walk a bit more to the meeting point of two river at Limbuni ,that’s a great place for Riverside camping and fishing,So basically you are doing a River trekking which is fun.
On the way to Limbuni there are two hidden gems ,one is Rainbow waterfall and another is a 3 steps waterfall ,due to insufficient things we couldn’t make it in my last visit but surely will do it in my next visit during 31st december,2018.
Meghalaya is having one now it’s time to find that one in our lovely bengal too..!!(that 3 steps waterfall).
As of now 4 homestays are in making but camping events are arranged time to time,either at the village ground or at the river bank. Many foreigner guest visits this place and stays for a long times ,some in tents some in someone’s house,So real homestay can be arranged if gone through proper contacts.
Read a bit more for the very special attraction of there ,The River Canyon..!!
River Canyoneering may be a very new term for the adventure lovers of India but it’s very famous worldwide as one of the most exciting adventure sports. You cannot find such nature’s blessings easily everywhere, Yelbong River canyon is one rare creation of nature,a very few such canyons can be found in India,You may think of Gangani but no this is something else. It’s God’s blessings that West Bengal got this.
This River canyon trek of West Bengal attracts many visitors from all around the world but alas we are so unlucky to unfold it to many of our Bengal travellers as well as Indian Travellers. This trek is organised batch wise, due to many reasons ,like the general arrangements like stay,food,toilets,instructors,safety gears,guides etc. The very first batch successfully explored it in late October of this year only,I was a part of this batch and believe me this is awestrucking . Yelbong River Canyon Trek, also called river canyoneering is an all-in-one package for adventures lovers. It combines rappelling, swimming, bouldering,jummering,river crossing and many other terms of adventure sports.
Time when this can be done:
Except monsoon and chilling cold of November to mid January. So late September to early November and late January to march is suitable time to access it.
