Kerala Travel Guide for 9 nights 10 days
Reading Time: 14 minutes

Do you want to cover Hills, beaches, religious place, back water, jungle, water falls in a single trip? Certainly Kerala is the ideal place for you. Most importantly, God’s Own Country isn’t just a destination; it’s a saga of experiences. As Kerala is filled with options, it is important to plan your trip wisely. It is very hard to visit all the corners of Kerala. Therefore by doing a wise planning you can experience all that was mentioned previously.

Munnar, Kerala

So here you will get a plan of 9 nights 10 days which starts from Kochi and ends at Trivandrum. In this plan you will experience mountain with lush greenery, waterfalls, harbor, temples, national park, beaches, back water. I always try to make plan where maximum variety can be covered.

Itinerary :

Day 1 : Kochi :

Day 2 : Munnar

Today after taking your breakfast, you can check out from hotel and proceed for Munnar. So, you can book a car from Kochi and also tell your driver to enroute Athirapally Falls and Vazhachal waterfalls. It will take little more time but these falls are must visit if you are in Kochi.

Athirapally falls is formed by the Chalakudy River, which originates in the Anamudi mountains (Western Ghats) and flows through the Vazhachal forest on its way to the Arabian Sea. Near Athirapally, the river becomes turbulent and surges around huge rocks. It cascades down in three separate parts from nearly 80 feet, forming the breathtaking Athirapally falls. The beauty of the falls is best seen from the bottom. But, remember that to reach bottom of the falls you have to walk a long sloppy way and climbing back is even more difficult. On your way to Munnar you can also visit Cheeyappara falls and Vallara falls.

If you are coming from Kochi and plan to visit Athirapally and Vazhachal falls you have to cover almost a distance of 235 km. So, even if you start at 7 A.M. you will reach in Munnar at around 4.30 P.M. However, after reaching and checking in to the hotel, you can stroll around Munnar.

It is a beautiful places. But please keep in mind that it is closed in Monday. So before planning keep this in your mind and you can adjust your plan accordingly.

After that you can go to Eravikulam National Park. This park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. After the Nilgiri Tahr, Neelakurinji flowers are the second major attraction of this park because this flower blooms once after every 12 years. It last bloomed in the year of 2018. After this, you can straight proceed for Chinnar Wild Life Sanctuary. Enroute you can spend some times at Marayoor and Lakkam Water falls.

It will take full day to visit all the places as mentioned above.

Therefore, you can visit one by one Photo Point, Mattupetty dam, Echo Point, Kundala Lake. Finally you can go to Top Station. In addition, Top Station is famous for its luscious tea gardens, which is a sensory experience in itself.

Further to your return to Munnar, you can go to Punarjani Traditional Village to experience Kathakali Dance form and Kalaripayattu martial art form. Each performance costs you Rs. 300 (Rate as per 2018) but if you take combo tickets it will cost you around Rs. 500. Ticket price may vary slightly according to type of ticket. Day 7 : Trivandrum

After breakfast, you can proceed for Trivandrum. If you are staying in Kollam, it will take less time to reach Trivandrum. So en-route you can easily spend some time in Varkala. Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. Varkala beach is also known as Papanasam Beach. There is a 2000 years old temple named Shree Janardhana Swamy temple in Varkala. After that, if time permits, you can visit to Napier Museum and Trivandrum Zoo after taking your lunch. Furthermore, you can go to your hotel and do your check-in formalities there. In the afternoon, you can go to Kovalam Beach for beautiful sunset.

Day 8 : Trivandrum

Today, you can spend your full day in city tour consisting of Padmanabha swamy Temple, Puthenmalika / Kuthiramalika Palace, Vallakadavu etc. In the evening you can go to Kovalam beach again to experience the beautiful sunset from there. Day 9 : Trivandrum to Kanyakumari and return

Today, you will go the southernmost point of India. The distance of Kanyakumari from Trivandrum is approximately 100 KM. And as you are going to Kanyakumari today, you surely do not want to miss the exceptional sunset. So it will be late evening to return back Trivandrum. There is a conducted bus tour arranged by KTDC (Throughout the week except Monday) which starts at 7.30 AM and ends at 10 PM. It will charge you Rs. 990 per person and enroute they will make you visit at Padmanabhapuram Palace.

But in my opinion, for this day, you can book a full car (4 seater/6 seater/8 seater and so on as per your team size). Moreover, you will get ample number of options in Trivandrum regarding the driver. But during your booking please tell the driver to stop at Poovar Island and Padmanabhapuram Palace. Poovar is known for back waters and Golden Sand Beach. But if you want to experience the back water, you have to bargain a lot. However, you will enjoy the ambience and nature with silence which will give peace of mind. Padmanabhapuram Palace is a well-preserved wooden palace which stands as a glorious testimony to the traditional Kerala Architecture. The extraordinary murals, exquisite floral carvings and the black glossy granite floor will certainly astonish you.

After reaching Kanyakumari, it will be better that first you stand in the queue for Vivekananda Rock Memorial. As, the length of the queue will increase as the time past. So, without wasting your time, firstly go to Vivekananda Rock Memorial. From the vessel during your ride to reach Vivekananda Rock, the view of Thiruvalluvar statue and the temple is just awesome. After that, you take your lunch and spent some time in the beach to experience the sunset from there. In short, for me it was the best part of my Kerala Tour after Munnar. I must visit Kanyakumari again.
